Things to Do Near Lookout Mountain: A Weekend Guide

Planning a Weekend in Our Backyard
At Little Coyote, we’re lucky enough to call St. Elmo, the charming, historic neighborhood sitting right at the base of Lookout Mountain, home. Every week, we see visitors heading up the mountain to explore its most iconic landmarks, trails, and local businesses. Since we’re right here in the middle of it all, we thought we’d put together a guide to the best things to do near Lookout Mountain (and the best places to eat, too, of course).
Think of it as a weekend itinerary: three days of sightseeing, hiking, shopping, and of course, eating well. Whether you’re visiting from out of town or just planning a staycation, here’s how to spend a full weekend soaking in everything our mountain and neighborhood have to offer.
Friday – Arrival & Exploring Historic St. Elmo
There’s no better place to start your weekend adventure than in St. Elmo, our little neighborhood at the foot of Lookout Mountain. The historic district is walkable, charming, and filled with beautiful natural views as well as locally owned spots we love to support.
Lunch in St. Elmo
Tacos El Tote – This authentic taco truck is a hidden gem, perfect for a casual lunch. They’re open Friday but closed on the weekend, so if you’re around, this is your chance.
The Purple Daisy Picnic Café – A laid-back spot that’s been feeding locals for years. Think sandwiches, barbecue plates, and classic Southern comfort food.
Things to Do in the Afternoon
Walk the St. Elmo Greenway – A pet and bike-friendly path that winds about 1–2 miles through the neighborhood. It’s the perfect way to stretch your legs, see historic St. Elmo homes, and end up near The Woodshop.
Shop Local – Pop into Sower, St. Elmo Mercantile, Studio Eleven, Cassette Skateshop, or Scenic City Wine.
Naughty Cat Café – For something quirky, stop in for coffee and cuddles with adoptable cats.
Dinner in St. Elmo
Little Coyote – Of course, we’d love to see you for dinner. We’re proud to be a 100% gluten-free kitchen serving barbecue with a Southern soul. From smoked meats to fresh tortillas pressed daily, this is where we put our heart on the plate.
1885 Grill – If you’re craving upscale Southern coastal fare, 1885 is another great option right in the neighborhood.
Dessert & Drinks
Clumpies Ice Cream – The St. Elmo location is at the base of the Incline Railway, making it a fun stop after dinner.
The Tap House and The Woodshop – For late-night drinks, these two local watering holes are staples. Grab a craft beer at The Tap House or a cocktail at The Woodshop before calling it a night.
Saturday – Lookout Mountain Adventures
Saturday is your day to really dive into Lookout Mountain. With historic sites, iconic attractions, and some of the best views in the South, this is where the mountain earns its reputation.
Morning: Ride the Incline Railway
Start the day with a ride on the Lookout Mountain Incline Railway, one of the world’s steepest passenger railways. The trip takes you from St. Elmo straight up the side of the mountain. At the top, you’ll find a panoramic observation deck with gorgeous views, plus the Incline’s own historic exhibits. Since you won’t have your car up top, this is more of a quick sightseeing trip. Ride up, take in the views, walk to nearby attractions, then head back down to your vehicle.
Late Morning & Afternoon: Drive Up the Mountain
Once you’re back at the base, hop in the car and make your way up Lookout Mountain by road. This is where you’ll spend the rest of the day exploring.
Point Park – Managed by the National Park Service, this historic Civil War site offers sweeping views and a dose of history.
Rock City – Famous for its gardens, “See Seven States” overlook, and whimsical Fairyland Caverns, Rock City is a must.
Ruby Falls – An underground waterfall located inside the mountain itself. The tours are guided and offer a one-of-a-kind adventure.
Sunset Rock – For hikers, this short trail rewards you with one of the most iconic views of Chattanooga.
Lunch on the Mountain
Market on the Mountain – A local favorite deli where you can grab sandwiches, snacks, and drinks to fuel the day.
Dinner on the Mountain
Massey’s Kitchen – Known for wood-fired pizzas and seasonal dishes, Massey’s offers an elevated but relaxed dinner spot.
Lookout Mountain Pizza – Casual, local, and family-friendly.
Evening Drinks
Canopy Coffee & Wine Bar – Cozy up with a glass of wine or an espresso before you head back down the mountain for the night.
Sunday – Trails, Parks & Relaxation
Wrap up your weekend with a slower-paced day outdoors. Sunday is for trails, nature, and a final stop back in St. Elmo before heading home.
Morning Outdoors
Glen Falls Trail – A short, moderate hike leading to a small but beautiful waterfall.
Cravens House Trail – A historic site with access to several hiking routes.
Lula Lake Land Trust – Open on select weekends, Lula Lake offers stunning trails and a dramatic waterfall.
Cloudland Canyon State Park – If you’re up for a drive, this park features rim trails, overlooks, and waterfalls that are well worth it.
Lunch in St. Elmo
The Hummus Bowl – A bright, fresh option for lunch. Think rice bowls, hummus plates, and Mediterranean flavors, gluten-free friendly and quick.
Afternoon
Reflection Riding Arboretum & Nature Center – Stroll through peaceful trails, see native plants and animals, and take in the quiet beauty of the property.
Chickamauga Battlefield – If history is your thing, drive out to explore one of the most important Civil War battlefields.
Final Treat
The Hot Chocolatier – Open until 6pm, this spot is perfect for a sweet treat earlier in the evening. It’s the perfect way to end a weekend on Lookout Mountain.
